Do You Need To Cleanse Your Crystals After Buying Them?
Can Amethyst Get Wet?
Yes, amethyst can get wet without getting damaged. Though this popular crystal can handle water, there are some precautions you will need to take depending on the type of water.
Avoid having amethyst in salt water for long periods of time as salt can damage the crystal over time. Fresh, tap or lake water is fine. If your amethyst does go in salt water, make sure to wash it off with fresh water to get any salt particles off.
After your amethyst comes in contact with water, make sure to dry it off or let it properly air dry to keep it nice.
Amethyst Hardness
Amethyst is a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, which tells us right away it’s okay to be in water. A 7 on the hardness scale also makes it durable enough to wear as everyday jewelry.
For comparison, calcite is a 3 on the hardness scale, and experts recommend that any calcite stone should not come in contact with water for long periods of time. Lightly washing calcite is okay, but submerging calcite in water for days on end can dissolve, crack, or break it!
Can You Swim With Amethyst Jewelry?
Because of the chemicals in pool water, swimming with amethyst jewelry is not recommended. Though a few times in the pool probably won’t do anything to your stone, I would still yield cautiously for future swims.

Can I Wear Amethyst In The Shower?
Yes, wearing amethyst jewelry in the shower is just fine. Just be aware of any haircare or body products you may use that could damage the stone.
Gentle soaps are fine to come in contact with amethyst, and they will clean your crystal for you!

Cleansing With Water
Many like to cleanse their crystals with water, and it is a great technique to recharge amethyst.
When cleansing amethyst with water, you could put it in a bowl of water for a few hours or hold it in a lake, running stream, or fresh body of water. Rainwater is also a great way to cleanse!
Amethyst And The Sun
While we are talking about water, let’s talk about another popular question that often comes up. Can amethyst be in the sun? Yes, but not for long.
I love to charge many of my crystals under the sun, but only for a short period of time. Putting amethyst in the sun for a long time (many hours or days) can fade it.
Why I Love Amethysts!
Anyone new to crystals immediately can recognize this stone, because of its popularity and bright bold colors. If you asked a handful of people what their favorite crystal is, I bet many of the answers would be amethyst!
I personally love amethysts because of their magical purple color and their calming nature. On my studio desk, I have an amethyst cluster and it’s one of my favorite pieces. Though I think I say that about every crystal I own. π
Conclusion
Amethyst is a very durable stone, so don’t worry about breaking it anytime soon! But with any crystal, you should treat them with care as they are natural materials, and breaking CAN happen.
I love crystals, and if you’re here, you probably do too. I’m excited to share more posts about crystals, crystal healing, and other topics that come up.
