You see a shiny new rock at a shop and take it home to add to your crystal collection. You may be wondering, do I need to cleanse my new crystal?

In this post, I will go over why you should cleanse (or charge). your crystals, the benefits of cleansing crystals, and ways to do so.

why you should cleanse crystals after buying them

I refer to cleansing crystals as charging sometimes, and to me, they are the same. You’re cleansing the crystal but you can also think about it as recharging it.

Do I Need To Charge My Crystals?

The answer is simple. Yes, you should cleanse your crystals after buying them. This goes for any crystal purchase, whether it be online, in a store, craft fair, etc.

Crystals are energy. That means they absorb the energy around them, just as we do!

If the crystal was lying near something negative or was handled by someone who had negative energy, you don’t want your crystal to have those negative energy associations.

How Long Does It Take To Cleanse A Crystal?

Some of the ways I have listed below can take a few minutes, some overnight. It depends on which method you choose, but they are all relatively quick and won’t take days to complete.

Ways To Cleanse Your Crystals

So how do you charge crystals? There are several ways, and these different cleansing techniques are all super easy to do.

Sound Cleansing

Cleansing with sound is a great way to charge crystals. You can do this by playing reiki music, using a singing bowl, etc.

If I choose this method to charge my crystals, I like to use a singing bowl. I’ve tagged the bowl I use below!

Sun or Moonlight

Letting your stones lie in sunlight or moonlight is an easy, natural way to clear their energies and give them some “charge” before using them for healing purposes. The moon is more restorative than the sun, so use this technique at night if you can.

Be mindful of crystals that may fade in direct sunlight, such as rose quartz, amethyst, opal, etc.

Charging crystals in the moonlight is one of my favorite ways to cleanse my stones! Moonlight is not as bright as the sun, so I feel safe charging all my crystals underneath the moon.

Smudging

Smudging and other methods of burning sage can help clear out the negative energy in any space you have, including crystals.

Sage bundles are great to have on hand when you need them.

Selenite

Using selenite to cleanse crystals is a super easy and effective way to recharge your stones. I personally have a selenite bowl where I can place my crystal into it to cleanse.

Selenite is one of those awesome stones that are a self-cleansing stone, so it can also cleanse other crystals!

If you don’t have a selenite bowl, I highly recommend getting one. I also like to place my crystal bracelets and jewelry into it to charge them as well.

How often should you cleanse and charge your crystals?

This can depend on many factors, including yourself, what you are using the stone for, etc, but your best judgment is the most basic answer to this. A lot of people say once per month is good to keep your crystals charged and cleansed, but if you feel more often is necessary, then do that.

Sometimes if I carry a stone around with me a lot, I may try to cleanse it a couple times a month. If you are using crystals for pure healing reasons, you will definitely need to cleanse them often.

Healing crystals and the world of crystals is a fun one, but it’s a journey. You learn along the way and that’s the beauty of it!
