I’ve written a lot about my love for combining oil pastels and watercolor, and in this post today, I want to share two new works featuring both mediums.
I’ll share the supplies I used as well and some other details. Let’s jump right into it. 🙂

Oil Pastel Flowers On Abstract Watercolor Backgrounds

So, unlike my abstract watercolor landscapes, which I can create every day without a problem, I have to be in the mood to create floral pieces. For some reason, it’s just one of those things; if I’m not into it at the moment, I just can’t create it.
But I got in the flower kick recently and made two new pieces to add to my floral collection. I started off by making the watercolor backgrounds and then later adding oil pastel flowers.
I only have behind-the-scenes photos for one of my new pieces, but I will share both floral paintings at the end of the post.
Supplies Used
Salt
Abstract Watercolor Background
Like I enjoy doing, I made the backgrounds with no rhyme or reason. Salt was added to create texture, and I splattered paint for more interesting elements.

I created some suggested flower shapes to see where that would take me, and loved how it came out.
There is so much freedom in creating these abstract watercolor backgrounds. Whatever it ends up looking like when it’s dry will help me determine the next steps for the painting.
Oil Pastel Flowers
I love creating flowers with oil pastels! They are buttery smooth to draw with and are just fun to use.

The Mungyo Gallery Oil Pastels are my favorite to work with. They are super affordable and high quality.
I drew flowers until I was happy, then scanned the paintings onto my computer.
Final Pieces

“Summer Blooms” watercolor & oil pastel

“Daisy Dreams” watercolor & oil pastel

Looking forward to creating more floral pieces. Stay tuned for what I create next!
