In this post, I want to share three of my latest watercolor and oil pastel paintings.

Combining these two mediums has been one of my favorite things to do for a long time. But I had put my oil pastels away for a while because sometimes I go through phases. This month, I was craving to get them back out, so here we are!
For some reason, I never want to use oil pastels alone; I always want to use them on top of a watercolor painting to enhance it.

Below, I’ll show pictures of the watercolor painting before and after oil pastels.
PSA if you didn’t know: you always use oil pastels AFTER you are done painting with watercolors. You cannot watercolor over oil pastel.
Here are three simple oil pastel and watercolor mixed media paintings I made this month:
#1- Little Landscape

I created this on a whim one day and had a lot of fun. It made me want to keep creating watercolor and oil pastel pieces. I used Gallery oil pastels and Meeden oil pastels for this one.
Basically, the process for this one was I threw some watercolor on the paper randomly to get a loose idea of a landscape and went with it. The oil pastels made it come together.
#2- Bold Flower Landscape

I went a little bolder with the watercolor painting in this one, and really, the oil pastels were just the finishing touch. This was painted on Arches cold press paper, my favorite!
#3- Larger Flower Field

I decided to do a larger piece for this third one since I was having so much fun. Once again, I threw random blobs of paint around until I was satisfied, let it dry, then added a lot of details with my oil pastels.
Which one is your favorite? Let me know in the comment section below!
I will write an updated post on my favorite oil pastel brands soon. Several years back, I made some posts about the topic, but I’m discovering new favorites now!
Thanks for reading. 🙂
