As I mentioned, oil pastels never fully dry. I suppose the only way to truly protect them would be to display them behind glass and not touch them.

Oil Pastel Fixative Spray

Personally, I like oil pastel fixative spray to seal my oil pastel art. It’s easy to use and does a good job.

The Sennelier oil pastel spray leaves a clear finish and adds a little sheen. It really makes the pastels pop! It’s highly recommended by many oil pastel artists, and I’m pleased with the results it gives.

How to Use Sennelier Fixative Spray: Step-by-Step

Spoiler: It’s very simple.

Work in a well-ventilated area

This is the most important step of the process because we need to protect our health. If you don’t have a well-ventilated area, spray your oil pastel art outside. I always recommend using it outside.

Test before applying

This is always my suggestion whenever you try a new product or sealing artwork of any kind. Test on a scrap piece of paper or an old artwork just to get a feel for the spray pattern and ensure the sealant will work for your art.

Spray from a distance

Shake the can well to ensure an even spray, and hold the can about 12-18 inches away from your art. Spray light, even coats in a side-to-side motion.

Let dry between layers

Another important step is to let the layers dry! Once you have applied a coat, wait for it to FULLY dry.

Everyone has a different opinion on how long to let the layers dry before applying another, but I’d say around 30 minutes is probably good.

Use your discretion, but usually 2-3 layers are enough to protect your art.

Tips For Best Results

  • Less is more
  • Avoid touching the surface even after spraying. The fixative helps reduce smudging but doesn’t make the drawing completely smudge-proof.
  • Once sealed, consider framing your artwork for extra longevity.

As a reminder, just because your art is “sealed” after using the spray does not mean you can scratch at it, rub it, or beat it up. You still have to be careful with it. The oil pastel fixative is really just a preventative; all oil pastel art must always be handled with care.

The spray does an excellent job, don’t get me wrong, you just still need to be gentle with your artwork. šŸ™‚

Final Thoughts About Sealing Oil Pastels

If you like to use oil pastel, consider using a fixative to protect your art. It’s great to use on random drawings you have lying around, for portfolio pieces, or for art that will be hung on a gallery wall. It just gives it a little extra protection to ensure your art lasts for years to come.

    Hi Amanda
I use Sennelier oil pastel fixative for my artwork.
It does make the colors slightly darker and more vibrant.
You mentioned applying several layers. I think I’ll give that a try.
