How To Stay Organized As An Artist

Below are some easy tips and ideas for artists to get organized!
Create a Dedicated Workspace
If you don’t have a studio, designate an area where you can focus solely on your work. This could be a room, a corner of a room, or a desk in your kitchen. Keep your tools, supplies, and equipment within arm’s reach to minimize distractions and save time searching for materials.
My art studio is in a tiny bedroom in my house! Though it’s very small, I have all my art supplies and work stored here for the sake of being organized.
Declutter Regularly
I sometimes am horrible at this but it’s okay to get rid of stuff. If you have some art materials you’ll never use again, instead of hoarding them, donate your supplies to an artist who could use them. A cluttered space can hinder your creative flow.
Definitely take time regularly to declutter your workspace by either organizing supplies, throwing away no longer needed items, or cleaning messy surfaces.
There have been so many times when I could not work at all because the mess in my studio was getting to me. Sometimes you just need to take a day to purge and clean!
Set Realistic Goals and Deadlines
Establishing goals and deadlines helps artists stay focused and organized. Break down larger projects into manageable tasks and set realistic deadlines for each.
I use a simple to-do notebook and break down my goals by week.
Digitalize Your Artwork
Invest in a scanner or digital camera to digitize your artwork. Create digital backups of your physical pieces to protect them from damage or loss. I like to organize my artwork by year in folders on my computer!
Digitizing artwork is also a great way to easily make future portfolios.
Utilize Storage Solutions
Invest in storage solutions that suit your needs. This may include storage bins, shelves, and drawers to keep art supplies neatly organized.
I have shelves, cube storage, bins, and a rolling cart in my studio to keep me organized. I’d be lost without my storage!

Develop a Routine
Consistency is key to maintaining organization. Establish a daily or weekly routine that includes time for creating art, organizing your workspace, and planning upcoming projects. A well-structured routine helps balance productivity and relaxation.
Make Lists
Lists have been keeping me organized since I was a kid in school. I cannot function without them. Lists can help you stay organized by utilizing them as to-do lists, future artwork ideas, supplies that need to be ordered, etc.
I have paper lists and lists on my computer and my phone. 🙂

Create a Vision Board
Do you have so many ideas that it’s stressful and overwhelming? Me too. Create a vision board outlining your long-term artistic goals and aspirations. Revisit your vision board regularly to stay motivated and focused!
Staying Organized As An Artist
Though it seems like a lot of work upfront, organizing helps in so many different ways and your future self will thank you for getting organized!
I like to do a quick tidy-up every week and a deep clean/ re-organize at least once a month. It’s crazy how quick things can get out of place!
