This post is about how to create a DIY toilet paper roll bird feeder.
Lately, I’ve been obsessing over birds. I’ve always thought they were beautiful, but for some reason lately I’m enjoying watching them and I want all the bird houses, bird feeders, etc, to make my backyard birds happy.

Our yard has always been a hot spot for birds, and I’m now enjoying watching birds eat from our feeders and making nests in our yard. Maybe this is a sign of getting older, lol.
I remember making many different types of homemade bird feeders in Girl Scouts when I was a little girl. It’s a super fun activity for kids.
Why Make a Toilet Paper Roll Bird Feeder?

Recycling toilet paper rolls helps reduce waste, and turning them into bird feeders gives them a second life. Plus, it encourages kids (and adults!) to connect with nature. Watching birds enjoy your handmade feeder is rewarding.
My husband and I had a lot of fun making these while our 19-month-old watched closely. We then went outside to hang them all around our yard and had a blast. Soon after, we had birds visiting our homemade bird feeders. 🙂
Making a toilet paper roll bird feeder is extremely easy and fun for all ages. Let’s jump right in!
How To: DIY Toilet Paper Roll Bird Feeder
Below are the step-by-step instructions on how to make this easy birder feeder.
You most likely have all the supplies you need at home if you already feed birds. Here’s what you need to create this simple bird feeder:
Supplies
Toilet paper roll
Bird seed
Peanut butter (other alternatives listed below)
String or twine
Butter knife
Paper plate
1. Spread Peanut Butter

The first step is spreading the peanut butter (see peanut butter alternatives further down) on the toilet paper roll.
You can do this with a butter knife or by rolling it into the peanut butter. I used a very liquid peanut butter, so I decided to pour some onto a plate and roll the tube into it. It was much easier that way.
Use an unsalted and unsweetened peanut butter free from artificial ingredients.
2. Roll In Bird Seed
Use a paper plate and pour some bird seed onto it. Roll your peanut butter-covered toilet paper roll back and forth in the bird seed until it’s coated.
Sprinkle seed onto the roll and lightly pat it down to make sure it’s evenly coated.

After the roll is coated, set it aside to harden.
3. Add String (optional)
Adding a string to your feeder is completely optional, but it’s a good way to secure it nicely on a tree. I used twine to hang my feeders.
Simply loop a piece of string through the tube and tie it into place where desired.

Peanut Butter Alternatives
If you’re allergic or just don’t like peanut butter, here are some alternatives to use on your bird feeder craft.
Sunflower Seed Butter
Soy Nut Butter
Vegetable Shortening
Coconut Oil
Important: Use unsalted, unsweetened spreads free from artificial ingredients.
Where To Hang Your Feeder

You can get creative with where you want to hang your feeders. We put them solely on branches without string (as seen above) and tied them to branches as well. You can also stick them on bushes.

By repurposing toilet paper rolls and skipping plastic feeders, you’re making an earth-friendly choice, all while showing a little extra care for local wildlife. 🙂
