Today I want to take you behind the scenes on creating one of my newer pieces!
This mixed-media painting was created by painting a unique watercolor background and drawing flowers on top of it with oil pastels.
The point of this post is to give you a little peek at my process and maybe inspire you along the way. Let’s get into it!
Daisy Oil Pastel Watercolor Painting
Supplies:
Watercolors
Watercolor Paper
Salt
Step 1: Create A Textured Watercolor Background

I’ve mentioned before that I can only paint on Arches Watercolor Paper, but I used cheaper watercolor paper for this painting because I was just playing around. I wanted to experiment with some textured backgrounds so I used the cheaper paper in case I didn’t like the outcome.
I’ve used Canson paper for years but recently became loyal to Arches. I have a lot of Canson paper left, so I figured I better start using it up.
It’s a nice paper for beginners, but I won’t personally buy it again once mine runs out. I guess I’m a watercolor paper snob now. 🙂
To create the textured background I used a lot of paint and salt. Check out my post on using salt on watercolor paintings here.

Step 2: Draw Daisies
After my background was completed and fully dry, I grabbed my oil pastels and started drawing daisies.

Currently, I use the Mungyo Gallery Oil Pastels. I highly recommend them! They are insanely affordable and nice quality.

I continued to draw with the oil pastels until I was happy. 🙂
Step 3: Edits
After I finished, I scanned the painting onto my computer, made a few edits in Photoshop, and then made a few more edits on my iPad using Procreate.
Here’s the finished painting!

I love how it came out and really enjoy combining oil pastels and watercolors in my work.
Thanks for reading!
