I think I am slowly finding myself again.

Often times I can get very overwhelmed as an artist because I like to do so much. Watercolors, digital, oil pastels, wood burning, etc. With my limited time, there’s only so much I can do.

I’ll never stick to just one medium so I’m always experimenting and that’s fun and all, but sometimes I feel lost in my sea of interests.

Below is my process for creating this painting titled “Winter Fairytale”!

Supplies:

Watercolors

Arches Paper (the best watercolor paper!)

Masking Fluid

White Gel Pen

Salt

Brushes

Winter Fairytale Semi-Abstract Watercolor Landscape

I started off by using masking fluid to draw a circle on the upper left side of the paper. This was going to be the moon so I wanted it left untouched (aka kept white).

It took a few minutes before the masking fluid was dry so I could start painting over it.

The only thing I was certain about for this painting was the full moon and a purple/blue/pink color palette so I started slapping paint on the paper. Slapping paint down sounds aggressive, but with these abstract watercolor paintings, I really do just start going at it with the paint because it helps me quickly get an idea for the painting.

I added salt to the sky (check out my adding salt to watercolor paintings blog here) because I wanted a fun whimsical texture.

I wasn’t feeling great about this painting initially and wanted to throw it out lol. But I kept adding details and it started to come alive.

Most artwork has an ugly stage of course, because it’s a process. Nothing starts off perfectly beautiful, but I will admit I sometimes struggle through my “ugly” stages.

I continued to add trees and details in the distance. One of my favorite ways to add white details to my watercolor paintings is with a white gel pen. I am obsessed with the uni-ball signo pens!

I peeled off the masking fluid and used one of my white gel pens to outline the full moon a little bit more. After that, I just kept adding details until it felt right.

Lately when creating I just intuitively create without planning. It seems I work better that way than over planning and outlining.
