In my recent post on how to make paint-poured rock art, I briefly shared one of my favorite sealers for rocks.

This post quickly covers the gloss glaze I love to use for my painted rocks. So let’s get right into it!

There are many sealants you can use for painted rocks. I personally love the DecoArt Triple Thick Gloss Glaze. It’s so shiny that it makes the rocks almost look like glass!

I’ve used this specific glaze for a few years and have sealed many rocks with it. Below are some of my thoughts and tips.

First off, you do not need a thick coat! This stuff is literally amazing. I only use one coat on my rocks and they are as shiny as can be.

You can do more than one coat if you want to but make sure to do thin layers. Doing thick layers of the glaze may make the finished product feel tacky. Thin coats allow it to cure properly.

Wear gloves when using the gloss glaze. This glaze is thick and will destroy the brush you are using if you don’t clean it ASAP after use.

I use old paintbrushes that I won’t cry over if they get destroyed but I always clean them right away in warm water because if you don’t the brush will be rock solid.

When applying the glaze, you’ll notice it dries pretty quickly. Move fast and apply evenly to ensure a nice finish.

You will want to wait at least 24 hours before sealing the back of the rocks or adding a second coat. Even if it feels dry to touch after a few minutes (it usually does) don’t add more until it has time to fully dry. Trust me!

Before & After!

Check out this before and after! This stuff really gives the ultimate finishing touch.

All in all, I recommend this stuff. I’ve also used the Triple Thick Glaze on canvas paintings! There are many uses for it.

It’s not recommended for outdoor use, so if you plan on leaving your rock art outside, be wary of that. I have left rocks out I sealed with this stuff through summers and winters and they seem to be holding up ok.
