Today I wanted to review one of my newest purchases: the Mungyo Gallery Artists’ soft oil pastels. I’ve been eyeing this set for a while and was craving some new oil pastels so I decided to try them out.

For a little background, I’ve been using oil pastels since I was a little kid, and I absolutely love them. They are so fun to use and I also loved to use them in my classroom when I taught K-12 art education.
So let’s get into this oil pastel set review!

When I purchased these, I didn’t know what to expect for the price. They are extremely affordable for what you get. I had been eyeing more expensive oil pastel sets, but just couldn’t justify spending an arm and a leg on a medium I don’t use every day for my artwork.
I did some research and it seemed the gallery oil pastels were rated well, so that’s when I decided to try them out for myself.
First Impressions
I purchased the set of 48 and there are so many beautiful colors in that set. What’s really nice about these oil pastels is you get a lot for your money.
When I first took out one of the pastels to try on paper, I couldn’t believe how buttery smooth they were. It was so satisfying. I’ve never had an oil pastel be that smooth. They also have great pigment, are easy to blend and layer beautifully!

I’ve always preferred oil pastels over chalk pastels because of the smoothness of oil pastels, but these were just another level than what I’m used to, so I’m a fan!
Tips
You can use these oil pastels on many different surfaces. I drew with them on really textured watercolor paper, but if you’re new to oil pastels, I’d recommend a smooth mixed media paper or some sort of pastel paper to try them out on.
I’d also recommend getting a blending stump as it helps to blend areas easily. You could also use a cotton swab but I find that method a bit harder when trying to blend properly.
Overall Thoughts
To put it simply, I highly recommend these oil pastels. Beginner, advanced, etc, they are nice to have in your tool kit. The quality is amazing for the price. I’m really excited to see what pieces I can create with these beautiful oil pastels!
I see myself using this set for landscape studies, floral drawings, and any still-life painting I want to do. There are endless possibilities for oil pastels.
The Mungyo Gallery oil pastels are available to purchase as a set of 24, 48, 72, or as a set of 120! I may ask Santa for a larger set this Christmas. π
