This post is about must-have bullet journal supplies.
Before I start I want to make one thing clear – don’t let the must-have supplies title make you think you need everything. You may not need all or most of these supplies because bullet journaling can be as simple or intricate as you want!
In the end, the only supplies you truly need to bullet journal are a journal and a pen.
But if you want to take your bullet journal game to the next level, you’ll probably want to dabble in these must-have supplies to create your dream journal.

As an artist of many mediums, I already have so many supplies in my studio to work with for my bullet journal. What I like to have on hand is some simple pens, usually some Tombow markers, gel pens, and some watercolor paint.
I think my journal aesthetic is simple and artistic, not over the top, still creative, but simple enough to keep me organized and get the job done.
Let’s get into my bullet journal supplies list!
Must-Have Bullet Journal Supplies
A Journal (obviously)
As mentioned, you obviously need a journal to bullet journal, unless you use a notebook or a binder with paper. My favorite bullet journals I’ve used are Scribbles That Matter and the LEUCHTTURM1917 journal and other ones I’ve randomly bought in stores, on Amazon, etc.
Everyone has a journal preference, so shop around and test out journals to see what works best for you.
Amazon has so many amazing journal choices to fit everyone’s aesthetic and needs. I have so many journals on my wishlist as I always like to try new ones.
A Ruler & Stencils!
If you want perfect lines in your bullet journal, then put a ruler on your must-have bullet journal supplies list. Even if your journal is dot grid and you think you can just wing those perfectly straight lines, trust me, just use a ruler.
There are also so many stencils on the market that can also serve as a straight edge. If you don’t like to draw or are a perfectionist, a stencil would definitely be helpful.
I kind of throw rulers and stencils in the same category, so I’ve grouped them together in this section.
White Out
No one is perfect (obviously) so it’s handy to have some whiteout in case you make a mistake. There are also other ways to cover mistakes, such as washi tape or a doodle over the mistake. Since it’s your journal, you call the shots. 🙂

Stickers
I see many people using stickers in their bullet journals, and it’s a great way to give your journal the aesthetic you are going for. I like to put stickers on the outside cover as well. There are so many sticker choices out there! Whether that be calendar stickers or just pretty stickers to make your journal how you like, the possibilities are endless.

Colored Markers
If you like color, highlighting, and doodling, markers are nice to have in your toolkit. Colored markers add a nice touch of personality to a journal. There are so many different markers on the market, you can spend very little and spend a lot. It depends on what you want to do with them, and what color varieties you are looking for.

Washi-Tape
Washi-tape is cool because it can be used for so many different things. Use it to outline a page, cover a mistake, tape in a photo, or add color to a page. I have a whole box full of different themed washi tape styles, and sometimes it just adds the perfect finishing touch.
Fineliner Pens
Fineliner pens are great for everyday writing in your journal. With archival inks, they are excellent for smudge-proof writing. If I had to only pick one item to use for bullet journaling, besides having a journal, it would definitely be fineliner pens!
Gel Pens
I love gel pens because I was in school when they got huge, so I have a soft spot for them, especially glitter gel pens. 🙂 Sometimes if you want a special pen to write or doddle within your journal, gel pens are just the right answer.
Supplies Bag
So far I’ve listed quite a few supplies. As I mentioned early on, these must-have bullet journal supplies are only must-have if you must have them! They really will help you create an awesome journal, but it’s fully up to you what you need or want. Having a supplies bag is really nice because you can safely store all your journaling supplies. Especially if you have multiple pens and markers.
Bullet Journaling Supplies

Micron pens are my go-to tool for my journal. They are simple and easy to use. I also use them a lot for my artwork! They are great pens that are handy to have in your toolbox.
I discovered bullet journaling way back in 2016 and I have used it on and off throughout the years. Journaling, organizing, and creativity make me so happy, so having a flexible journal is perfect for me.
There are so many creative journalers out there who use all sorts of supplies, and it’s fun looking through Pinterest to get ideas for your journal.
