Happy New Year! I wanted to share my new watercolor painting “Lunar Twilight” in this post today.

This landscape painting was created with watercolors on Arches Cold Press Paper (my favorite watercolor paper!).

I mention this a lot in my posts, but I’ll share it again if you’re new here: Most of my work is 100% intuitive. That means I have zero idea what I will paint when I sit down at my desk.

Of course, my paintings are usually landscapes, florals, moon paintings, or something like that, but I have no idea what they will look like in the end. I let the paint guide me and just enjoy the process. 🙂

While the original is not for sale, it is available as a notecard, or art print!

Materials Used:

Daniel Smith Watercolors

Salt

Arches Watercolor Paper

White Gouache

White Gel Pen

I didn’t record/take many pictures of the process, but I’ll share the first layer of watercolor with you.

The first layer really sets the stage for what the painting is going to be. Once it dries I can see what direction I want to take it.

I love cool-toned colors and work with them A LOT. But lately, I’ve been experimenting with Aussie Red Gold and Quinacridone Gold from Daniel Smith Watercolors. They are so stunning and perfect for sunsets and fireflies and can make an area pop on your painting.

I started this painting by laying down the warm gold and then adding in some magentas to start mixing in other colors.

Then I added blue and kept building the sky up. I dropped in some salt to create texture and then started adding green to the horizon line.

I then decided to add some blue in the foreground for a water landscape.

After a few more touches I let it completely dry. Then I added trees, stars, some highlights, and the moon.

After the painting was complete I scanned it onto my computer, did some further edits in Photoshop, and made it into a print & card! Here’s the final painting:

I love how this one came out and really enjoyed making it. 🙂

This year I hope to share a lot of behind the scenes of my work here on my blog. I always enjoy seeing an artist’s process, so I hope to inspire many others in 2025.

As always if you have any questions or comments, post them below!

Thanks for reading. 🙂
