What jobs can you get with an art degree? There are many!

However, pursuing an art degree is often perceived as a bold and unconventional choice. You may get comments like “you’ll never get a job” to people laughing in your face asking if you want to be a starving artist. Unfortunately, I’ve had this happen, but I’m the one laughing now.

What many don’t understand is that an art degree is so much more than standing behind an easel all day.

Sure, many art degree graduates go on to be a traditional artist and make it. But believe it or not, an art degree can help you excel in many different careers.

A degree in art opens doors to a world of creative and fulfilling career opportunities that can be financially rewarding and personally satisfying.

For a little background, I have an art studio bachelor’s degree with a concentration in graphic design. I went on to start my master’s degree in art education but didn’t finish because I changed my mind about teaching.

Jobs You Can Get With An Art Degree

Visual Artist

The most obvious path for art degree holders is to become a visual artist. You can specialize in painting, sculpture, photography, or any other medium that suits your talent and passion. This is not easy and success is not guaranteed, but it’s not impossible.

Graphic Designer

In a world driven by visuals, graphic designers are in high demand. Designers create everything from logos, and advertisements, to web design, marketing materials, and more. Graphic design is a great field to get into.

Art Education

With a degree in art education, you can work as an art teacher in schools, and colleges, or even offer private lessons. Sharing your knowledge and passion for art with students is incredibly rewarding. 🙂

Art Therapy

This is a growing field that combines psychology and art to help individuals cope with emotional and psychological challenges. Art therapists can work in a variety of settings, such as healthcare facilities, rehabilitation centers, and schools.

Curator or Museum Director

For those who have a deep appreciation for art history, working as a curator or museum director is a dream come true. These professionals are responsible for preserving and displaying art collections, organizing exhibitions, and educating the public about art and culture.

Art Critic or Writer

If you have a passion for both art and writing, you can become an art critic or writer. Art critics review exhibitions and analyze artworks, while art writers produce articles, books, and essays about art and artists, contributing to the field’s discourse and understanding.

Art Gallery Owner

Owning an art gallery allows you to curate and showcase artists’ works, connect with art collectors, and contribute to the art community.

Set and Costume Design

Art degree holders can find a niche in the entertainment industry by working as set and costume designers for theater, film, and television productions.

Entrepreneur

Combine your artistic skills with business by starting your own art business. I am an art degree graduate who is an entrepreneur!

This could involve creating and selling your own art pieces, designing custom products, etc. There are so many ways to make money as an artist.

Illustrator

Illustrators bring stories to life through their visual interpretations. Whether it’s illustrating children’s books, creating editorial illustrations for magazines, or designing visuals for marketing campaigns, illustrators play a crucial role in storytelling across various industries.

Animation and Multimedia

Enter the dynamic world of animation and multimedia, where your artistic skills can be utilized to create engaging and visually stunning content. This could involve working on animated films, video games, virtual reality experiences, or interactive media.

Freelance Artist
