Do you want to start wood burning art? Pyrography (wood burning) is a unique art medium where you use heat to create art onto wood. This is done with a wood burning pen to create designs.
Anyone can wood burn, and all you need to succeed is practice, patience, and trust in yourself. This medium does take practice, but when you do practice you will quickly grow from a beginner wood burning artist to a professional.
For a little background, I’ve been wood burning since 2015/2016. Since then I have created custom wood burning work for people all over the country along with selling my original wood burned creations online.
When I started out, I had to practice a lot to become comfortable with the medium. You have to learn how hard to press down for darkness and what temperature to put your tool on to create a certain effect, but with practice comes confidence.

Believe In Yourself
Not to sound corny, but if you don’t believe you can do it, then it will be hard. Have some patience and trust in yourself when starting wood burning art. It can sometimes be frustrating in the beginning when you are trying to make your work perfect but trust me when you think you can do it, you can.
Watch Tutorials
Head to YouTube and watch other people’s wood burning videos to see how they work. You can just jump into wood burning blindly if you want, but it’s always good to get some background on it.
Practice, Practice, Practice!
Even if you are an artist with years of experience drawing, there is still a learning curve with wood burning art. Practice on scrap pieces of wood before you start burning.

Burn What You Love
In the beginning, I really think you should burn what you love so you can create something you will like. Don’t do custom work for someone when you are first starting, just create what YOU want to create. It’s much easier to succeed if you actually like what you are trying to create.

Invest In Tools
I always recommend the Walnut Hollow Versa Tool as a beginner wood burning tool. If you want to invest in tools to further your skills I recommend the Razertip Dual Wood Burning Machine as a professional choice. Even though the Versa Tool can last you many years and serve as a great tool, the Razertip heats up immediately and you can switch from pen to pen seamlessly.
When you are creating work to sell or doing custom orders, time is money, hence why the Razertip is a great choice. It is expensive, and not necessary for every wood burning artist, but it saves me so much time and headaches.
