Wondering what you need to make beautiful DIY wood burned ornaments this holiday season? In this post, I’ll share supplies you need and some tips and tricks too.

For some background, I’ve been wood burning for many years and sell my work along with writing educational blog posts for wood burner beginners. I love to help and share my knowledge with anyone willing to learn!

To make DIY wood slice Christmas ornaments, you need a few supplies to get started.

Some of these supplies are optional, but you’ll most importantly need a wood slice round and a wood burner tool to create an ornament wood burning.

DIY Wood Ornament Supplies

  • Wood slices
  • A wood burner tool
  • A drill
  • Yarn, twine, ribbon, or whatever you have that works!
  • (optional) A pencil to sketch out your design
  • (optional) A sealant of some sort to protect your work

How To Make Wood Burned Ornaments

1- Sketch out your design then wood burn it onto your wood slice. I always recommend sketching out your design before burning especially if you’re a beginner.

2- After your wood burn is complete, drill a hole in the wood. Some wood slices you can buy pre-drilled if that is more convenient for you. I personally drill holes because I like the flexibility of where to place them on my ornaments.

3- (optional) Spray a sealant or use a varnish on your ornaments to protect them. I usually use a spray protectant for my painted ornaments and sometimes my wood burned ornaments, but not often.

4- Tie your ribbon/twine/yarn or whatever you use to your ornament! I like to make a knot before I tie a loop at the top so it’s sturdy. I used twine for my rustic holiday wood ornaments.

5- Done! Creating handmade ornaments is so versatile and you can really make anything you like.

My favorite wood to create ornaments on is basswood and birch. I love the natural rustic edge!

Wood Burned Ornament Design Ideas:

  • Trees
  • Flowers
  • Reindeer
  • Animals
  • Words/quotes
  • Snowflakes
  • Initials/names

The possibilities are endless when creating wood burned holiday ornaments.

What I like about creating ornaments is that they can be honestly displayed at any time of the year. I personally make them not super holiday-themed so they can be for any occasion.

If you’re a small business and believe you only can add ornaments to your shop just before the holiday season, think again! I sell ornaments all year round!
