In this blog post, I share common wood burning art questions and my answers.

Most people have basic questions when starting wood burning, so don’t be embarrassed! It’s important to be aware of several different things before getting started for your safety as well.

Trust me, when I first discovered wood burning I knew NOTHING and was googling away all my questions.

Let’s get started answering some wood burning questions!

Your Guide to Common Wood Burning Questions

What tools do I need to start wood burning?

Simply a wood burning tool and a piece of wood.

Of course, you can always use other tools, but you can keep it simple. I do recommend a mask for safety. Check out my wood burning safety tips here.

I’ll always recommend the Creative Versa Tool to beginners. I’ve mentioned it so many times here on my blog. I bought mine probably over 8 years ago and I still use it.

What type of wood is best for pyrography?

There are several options when choosing a piece of wood to burn on. I recommend basswood because it’s easy to burn and readily available in many craft stores.

IMPORTANT: Never burn wood that has been treated, painted, or altered in any way.

How do I prepare the wood for burning?

I like to purchase sanded wood because I don’t have time to sand my wood slabs. But you’ll want a nice piece of untreated wood that is sanded smoothly.

How can I add color to my wood-burning projects?

It’s up to you! Some popular choices are acrylic paint, watercolor paint, colored pencils, oil pastels, and more.

A little bit of advice: always practice adding color to the wood before doing it to a project. You’ll want to get comfortable and see how it applies to the wood before going into it blindly.

        Is wood burning art safe?

Yes, but it’s important to take precautions. Work in a well-ventilated area, wear a mask, and always keep your working area safe.

          How do I fix mistakes?

Mistakes are part of the learning process! Most times I will embrace them.

The best option if possible is to lightly sand the mistake with fine-grit sandpaper, but that all depends on your piece and design.

You could also incorporate the mistake and try to make it a part of your artwork.

Mistakes are normal. Try not to worry too much about them. Wood burning art is done by hand and nothing will ever be perfect.

Do I need to seal my work?

No, it’s not required to seal your work. But it may help protect your work longer. I usually like to seal my work especially if I plan on selling the piece.

Check out my how to seal wood burning art post for a tutorial:

How can I improve my skills?

how to prep wood for pyrography

I’ve vastly improved over the years and it all came from trial and error and plain old practice. Don’t give up and keep practicing and you’ll eventually get the results you want. It won’t come overnight so be patient and kind with yourself!

Do you have any other wood burning questions? Did I miss any questions that should be on this list? Comment below!

As I mentioned earlier in this post, my wood burning resource page has a lot of other pyrography resources if you’re interested.

          Thanks for reading. 🙂
