Outlining pens are best used for adding texture, detail, and unique marks to paintings.

They help define edges and elevate your paintings further.

I use them for outlining, drawing, and adding little details to my artwork. I also enjoy writing with them.

Will Micron Pens Bleed With Watercolor?

No, Micron Pens are waterproof.

This means you can draw with them and then paint a watercolor wash over them.

This feature makes them great for mixed media work!

Do You Apply Microns Before Or After Watercolor?

Either! Since they are waterproof, it doesn’t matter if you use them before or after when using watercolors. I’ve done both. I often use them after I’m done painting to add miscellaneous details.

I used Micron Pens on this painting to add detail to the cabin and make it pop. It was my final step after I finished painting with watercolors.

Other Uses For Micron Pens

These awesome pens can also be used for sketching, journaling, writing, and more. They are really a great tool to have on hand if you’re an artist. I use them for EVERYTHING. They are archival ink, which is another great bonus.

They come in several different tip sizes which is helpful. I made a quick chart with a few pens I had on my desk to show you the differences between the tip thickness.

I probably use 005, 01, and 05 the most. 005 is perfect for adding very light details to paintings.

Best Outlining Pens for Watercolor Artists

Have you used Micron Pens in your watercolor paintings? How do you like them?

I’m sure there are other choices on the market but I’ve used these pens for over a decade now so I trust them and won’t ever not have them in my tool kit.
