Water brushes are great to have on hand if you paint with watercolors.

I’ve been using water brushes since around 2016 and I’m a huge fan of them. You’ll find out more about that below. 🙂

Benefits Of Using Water Brushes

In this brief post, I explain the benefits of using water brushes and why every artist who works with watercolors should have one in their tool kit!

Water Brushes For Watercolor Painting

What is a water brush?

A water brush is a painting tool that combines a brush with a small tube that can be filled with water. Simply fill the barrel with water, then squeeze the brush to disperse the water! No need for a separate cup of water when painting. It makes for a smooth painting experience, especially when traveling!

Benefits Of Using Water Brushes

If you like convenience or are a traveling artist, you’ll probably love a water brush. Below, let’s discuss some benefits of water brushes for watercolor painting.

Benefits Of Using Water Brushes For Watercolor Painting

Portability

I think the biggest advantage of using water brushes is their portability. You don’t need a separate water container, making them ideal for painting on the go, whether you’re traveling, plein air painting, etc.

Less Of A Mess

With a water brush, you have more control over the water, reducing the chances of accidentally knocking over your water cup (been there done that haha).

Versatility

Water brushes are incredibly versatile. They aren’t just for watercolors, they can also be used with watercolor pencils, water-soluble crayons, ink, etc. So if you’re a mixed-media artist, a water brush is a great tool to have.

Convenience

Water brushes simplify the watercolor painting process. You can easily control the water flow with a gentle squeeze. This allows for seamless transitions between washes without constantly dipping your brush in water.

Getting Started with Water Brushes

Water brushes come in various shapes and sizes. Search for a brush that suits your needs. I’ll link a few brushes I like to use below.

Using Water Brushes

Do you use water brushes? What are your thoughts on them? I wouldn’t replace my regular watercolor brushes with water brushes, but they’re definitely a great tool to have on hand when you need them.
