In today’s post, I want to talk about my process and ideas behind my latest creation, the sunflower moon painting and wood burning.

I’ve had this idea in my head for a long time, and it combines two of my favorite things: sunflowers and the moon. This project also combined two of my favorite mediums, pyrography, and painting! It was a total win and I had so much fun creating it.
This sunflower moon painting is currently up for grabs! Check out my shop here to see this original and more.

Sunflower Moon Wood Burning & Painted Sign
Tools Used
This unique piece was created on rustic basswood with my wood burner tool, gesso, and some handy acrylic paint.
I love mixing wood burning and painting techniques because wood burning creates such a unique texture, and painting on wood is so awesome. Remember: never wood burn over paint, always burn first then paint.

Process
I sketched out the sunflower first on the piece of wood then started wood burning the petals. This took several hours as I go over the lines many times to add lots of details and shading. The petals were complete before I started painting the center for the moon.
When I was ready to paint, I painted the center with some gesso, let it dry, then went in to add details for the moon with my acrylic paints.

I choose blue tones for the moon as I really wanted the full moon to pop and the petals to set the background.
After the painting was complete, I sealed it with a spray varnish and attached a sawtooth hanger on the back.
Final Thoughts

I’m already planning my next sunflower moon piece. The possibilities are endless and I just love it so much.
This final piece made me feel that happiness I haven’t felt in a while after creating, it must mean it’s right! Every artist and creative will know the feeling I’m talking about. π
