Are you looking for beginner wood burning tools so you can start making wood burned art?
As a professional wood burning artist, I’m here to share my opinion on the best wood burning tools for beginners.
It can be confusing when starting out because there are so many tools and supplies out there to choose from. I have put together a simple list of the best beginner wood burning tools to help you start creating.
You simply need two things to start, a wood burning pen and a piece of wood.
Wood burning, which is also called pyrography, is an awesome art where you use a hot wood burning tool to create unique designs onto wood. Since sharing my work on social media, I get a lot of questions about what tools and supplies I use for my wood burning art, and what beginners should start with. Wood burners range from very affordable to expensive and I am going to share the best tools for beginners below.
Wood Burning Tools For Beginners
Best Beginner Wood Burner Kit
There are many beginner wood burning kits out there. The first wood burning kit I started with years ago is the Walnut Hollow Versa Tool, and guess what, this wood burner is still a must-have tool for me! The starter kit comes with a variety of different wood burning tips so it is a great model to practice and develop your skills with. The heat is adjustable and you can buy other tips for it including letter stamps and more. It is truly an all-around excellent burner for beginners!
Overall, I recommend this as the best wood burning kit to start with. It is very affordable for what you get, and I have had this burner since 2016 and mine is still kicking (and I wood burn A LOT)!
Best Erasers For Wood Burning
When you wood burn, especially as a beginner, you do a lot of erasing, and that is totally okay! Sometimes when you don’t use a good eraser, the pencil lines are still visible on the wood even after you erase. Erasing pencil marks on wood can be very tricky because it’s not as easy as erasing lines on a piece of paper.
These Tombow erasers are THE BEST and remove pencil lines on wood better than any other erasers I have tried. It can be really frustrating when pencil lines are still visible on your wood burning piece so I always recommend buying these awesome erasers. Plus the pack of 5 erasers will last for years.

The Best Wood Surface To Burn On
There are many different kinds of wood you can burn on. Some are very easy to burn, and some are much more difficult and require better tools. Basswood is one of the best woods to burn, especially as a beginner.
I still use this wood for 95% of the work I currently do. It’s a softer wood so burning is easy and smooth. Walnut Hollow has beautiful basswood pieces available and they are sanded! I 100% recommend working on a piece of basswood, it makes the burning process so much easier, especially as a beginner.

Are you ready to start wood burning?
That about covers the basic tools you need as a beginner wood burning artist. As I said, you really just need a piece of wood and a burning tool. You can use any pencil and having those Tombow erasers on hand will save you some headaches down the road.
I sometimes free-hand wood burn, so I don’t always use a pencil sketch, but as a beginner, you should definitely sketch out your art before burning.

What I love about the art of wood burning is that every single piece you create is truly unique and can NEVER be recreated. This is because every piece of wood is different and a piece of art in itself with knots, grain, type, etc.
