This post is all about creating an abstract sunflower field landscape.

Is anyone else ready for summer already? Where I live, the cold drags on for months, and I’m usually ready for the warmth by the new year.

The other day I was picturing a warm summer evening and decided to paint a quick scene.

The painting isn’t super detailed, I’d consider it semi-abstract, but it captured the vibe I was going for.

In this post, I’ll share my process! The video version is embedded below if you prefer to watch a video instead of read. 🙂

I use Mungyo oil pastels and I highly recommend them. They are an excellent price for the quality. The box set of 48 colors gives you so many choices to create some awesome art with them.

This painting is small, 3.5″ in size. It was a scrap of watercolor paper I had on my desk. I love using paper scraps to create mini little scenes. 🙂

Most of my paintings are intuitive, meaning I don’t have much of a plan and let the paint work its magic. I had warm colors in my mind for this particular painting, and the sunflowers came later after I saw the scene unfold.

After I did a basic wash for the sky, foreground, and horizon, I started to build up the horizon line more with one of my favorite colors, Under Sea Green. I think I use this color from Daniel Smith for most of my paintings. 🙂

I kept building color and then let my painting dry. After the painting was 100% dry, I grabbed my oil pastels to build up the foreground more.

I used my oil pastels to simply add some marks at the bottom to indicate sunflowers. They aren’t detailed marks and are mostly just little blobs to suggest florals. It’s so much fun!

I loved creating this painting. It made me feel happy about the upcoming warm seasons. Even though it’s not technically winter yet, I’m already over it haha.

Combining watercolors and oil pastels is one of my favorite techniques. They go so well together and compliment my style.

Thanks so much for checking out this post!
