With the upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8th this year, there has been a lot of buzz about eclipses. Along with creating art inspired by the upcoming eclipse, I wanted to learn more about the different eclipses that occur. So here we are!
It’s no secret that the cosmos has always held a profound fascination for humanity. One of the most awe-inspiring occurrences is the solar eclipse.
In this blog, I explore the different types of solar eclipses and shed some light on the magical dance between the Earth, Moon, and Sun. Let’s get into it!

Different Types Of Solar Eclipses

Total Solar Eclipse
A total solar eclipse is when the moon completely covers the sun, casting a shadow on Earth. During this celestial alignment, the day briefly transforms into night, and the solar corona—an ethereal halo of light—becomes visible. Total solar eclipses are rare events, visible only along a narrow path on Earth.
This year, I am lucky to be in the path of visibility for the total solar eclipse on April 8th!
Partial Solar Eclipse
More common than total eclipses, partial solar eclipses occur when only a portion of the Sun is obscured by the passing Moon. It appears as if a bite has been taken out of the Sun, creating a crescent-shaped silhouette. Partial solar eclipses are visible over a broader geographical area than total eclipses, allowing more people to witness them.
Annular Solar Eclipse
An annular solar eclipse unfolds when the Moon covers the central part of the Sun, leaving a ring-like structure of sunlight visible around the edges. This occurs when the Moon is farther away from the Earth, making it appear slightly smaller in the sky. The result is a captivating “ring of fire,” as the bright edges of the Sun illuminate the celestial circumference of the Moon.
Hybrid Solar Eclipse
The hybrid solar eclipse is a celestial chameleon that transitions between total and annular phases along its path. The nature of this eclipse depends on the observer’s location within the eclipse path. Some may witness a brief total eclipse, while others experience an annular eclipse. Hybrid eclipses are relatively rare and offer a unique viewing experience for those fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time.
Partial Lunar Eclipse
Lunar eclipses occur when the Earth casts its shadow on the Moon. A partial lunar eclipse happens when only a portion of the Moon enters the Earth’s shadow, creating a subtle shading effect. Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are visible from anywhere on the night side of the Earth where the Moon is above the horizon.
Penumbral Lunar Eclipse
The penumbral lunar eclipse is the subtlest of lunar eclipses, occurring when the Moon passes through the Earth’s penumbral shadow. In this case, the dimming effect is minimal, and casual observers might not even notice the eclipse is happening.
